In the hustle of day-to-day life, especially in a fast-paced career like travel nursing, it can be tough to find time for everything on your plate. That's why we've put together 9 practical ways to free up a little more time in your day, so you can focus on what really matters.

1. Stay organized - or make it impossible to lose things

Some people thrive in chaos and still know exactly where everything is. But for the rest of us, lost keys and missing phones can turn into serious time-wasters.

Simplify your space with the old rule: "A place for everything, and everything in its place." Keep essentials like your phone, wallet, and keys in a designated spot - like a basket or cubby near the door. Return items to their place after each use, and consider investing in drawer organizers or storage bins to keep clutter under control.

Still losing things? Consider buying a locating device, like a key finder, to track them down remotely.

2. Plan dinner in advance

One of the biggest time drains? Figuring out what's for dinner every night. Instead, plan your meals and grocery list for the entire week in one go. You'll save time, reduce food waste, and avoid multiple store trips.

Bonus: see if your grocery store offers online ordering or curbside pickup!

3. Cook once, eat twice

Once you've got meal planning down, start doubling recipes and freezing extra portions. Each frozen meal is one less dinner to cook next week - that's time saved and stress avoided.

Want to take it further? Coordinate a meal swap with fellow travel nurses! Each person makes one dish for the group on a rotating schedule. It's a great way to share the load and enjoy variety.

4. Keep snacks handy

When hunger hits mid-shift or on the road, skip the vending machine search. Keep easy, energizing snacks like a protein bar or piece of fruit in your bag. Your future self will thank you.

5. Carpool when you can

If you've got coworkers nearby, see if you can share the commute. Carpooling saves time, reduces stress, cuts down on gas and parking costs, and gives you someone to chat with after a long shift.

6. Cut the distractions

Notifications, pings, and endless scrolling are major time thieves. Turn off non-essential alerts and carve out phone-free time each day. Need to keep your phone close? Turn up the ringer and place it out of reach - like across the room or in a drawer.

7. Limit daily distractions

Decision fatigue is real. The more choices you make, the more mentally drained (and time-strapped) you become. Simplify wherever possible. Start by streamlining your wardrobe to a few favorite outfits you can rotate without thinking twice.

8. Set boundaries (and stick to them)

As a healthcare professional, your instinct might be to say "yes" to every request. But without healthy boundaries, your time (and energy) gets spread thin.

Protect your schedule by practicing polite but firm "no's" - and remember, setting limits isn't selfish. It's smart.

9. Embrace 'good enough'

In your nursing role, perfection matters. Off the clock? It's okay to let that go. You don't have to fold the laundry perfectly or cook a gourmet meal every night. Prioritize what matters and aim for good enough in the rest.
