Relating to Your Manager

Everyone knows that it is important to make sure you are meeting (and hopefully exceeding) your manager’s expectations. A key component to that is making sure you are “managing up” when you are on assignment.  We wanted to share with you a couple of tips to help ensure a good relationship with your manager.

1. Be positive and effective.
Keeping a positive attitude isn’t always easy, but it’s definitely valuable.  It rubs off on your co-works and reflects back on you.  Displaying a positive attitude while you effectively manage your tasks will help your manager appreciate you even more.

2. Understand your manager’s point-of-view
Great team members understand the point of view of their managers and their team members.  Take the time to learn what matters most to them so that you can ensure you are meeting their needs – even if they haven’t told you specifically what they are.

3. Be appreciative
You are in the groove now and probably have a pretty good handle on what you need to accomplish each day.  However, make sure you acknowledge when your manager or team members give you tips, advise you on something or take care of something for you.  Demonstrating your appreciation is an important way to show others their value to you.

These few simple tips will help you “manage up” with your boss while you are on your assignment.
