Five Tips for Staying Healthy During Assignments

Life as a travel nurse is a busy one. Traveling to a new facility every 13 weeks and living in an unfamiliar town can distract you from taking care of yourself. Whether it is your first or tenth contract, you must take care of yourself during and in between contracts. Staying healthy during assignments will not only boost your immune system but will enhance your productivity and mood. Check out our top tips for maintaining good health during your travel nursing career.

1 – Stick to a Routine

Throughout your career, your shifts may differ from each contract. One assignment may be night shifts, while your next assignment has you working days or variable shifts. No matter what shift you end up with, make sure to stick to your routine. For example, if you usually exercise before work or meal prep for the week, continue to do so. Maintaining your daily or weekly routine will give your body a sense of normalcy, and overall will help you stay healthy.

2 – Rest Up and Take Breaks

Though this may be easier said than done, it is recommended to get at least 7-10 hours of rest each night. Sleeping has many health benefits such as boosting your immune system, concentration, mood, and motivation. Along with sleep, make sure to take breaks during your shift. While there may be times when it is just not possible to do, try your best to save some time for yourself even if it is to grab a quick snack or a cup of coffee.

3 – Eat Healthy

With life constantly on the go, we recommend trying to meal plan each week. Not only will this help you avoid constant trips to the hospital vending machine or cafeteria, but you will also have leftovers to make meals even easier. When planning your lunches and snacks, be sure to pack immune-boosting and energizing foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Maintaining a well-balanced diet is key to keeping yourself healthy.

4 – Exercise with Friends

Whether it be a friend, family member, or co-worker, having someone to workout with is a great way to stay motivated and on track. This can also be a great way to meet and form friendships with fellow, like-minded co-workers during your assignments. Not only will you stay in shape, but spending time with others outside of work can help reduce the feeling of loneliness while away from home.

5 – Reduce Stress

Lastly, take time for yourself to relax and unwind. Leave work at work and do an activity you enjoy. Take a day adventuring solo by going on a hike, trying out a new restaurant, or going to the spa. Spend the day indoors watching your favorite shows, reading, or indulging in arts and crafts. Whatever activities interest you, be sure to take a break from reality and enjoy yourself. Having “me” time is important for not only your health, but your mental wellness.
